31 Years Together. 20 Years Training Together. Still Getting Stronger

Echelon Couple Spotlight: Nikki & Mike Amoriello
Some couples do date night.
Nikki and Mike Amoriello do deadlifts, functional workouts, SkiErg, rowing, biking… and then date night.
After 31 years together, 21 years of marriage, and nearly 20 years as workout partners, Nikki and Mike have figured out something pretty special:
Fitness isn't just something they do. It's something they share.
And for the past three-plus years, Echelon Health & Fitness has been proud to be part of their journey.
It Started Long Before Echelon
Nikki and Mike met in high school in 1994. More than three decades later, they're still together, still pushing each other—and apparently still debating whether it's time for the gym or dinner.
For the record, Nikki usually wins that debate.
Mike has been known to throw out a tempting “Dinner?” when it's time to work out.
Nikki's response?
Gym first. Then dinner.
That's accountability.
A Heart Attack Changed Their Perspective
Their commitment to fitness took on a much deeper meaning after Mike suffered a heart attack in late 2006.
That experience became a turning point.
Together, they decided to make positive changes for their health and build a lifestyle centered around becoming stronger, healthier and more active.
Nearly 20 years later, they're still showing up.
Today, Nikki and Mike try to train five to six days a week, and when they work out together, there's definitely no boring routine.
One day might be heavy lifting. Another might combine cardio and strength training. Other days they're creating their own fast-paced functional workout using the SkiErg, rower, bike and weights.
If they're not lifting throughout the gym, there's a pretty good chance you'll find them on Echelon's green turf or around the rig putting in the work.
So…Who's More Competitive?
Easy.
Mike. 100%.
According to Nikki, competition is simply in his nature. He loves doing the hard stuff and challenging himself beyond whatever he thinks his limits might be.
But don't underestimate Nikki.
She admits she's usually the one asking, “How many more?”—mainly because she pushes herself HARD.
And when Nikki is having one of those days when the workout just isn't happening?
Mike pushes her.
When one isn't motivated, the other helps get them moving.
That's what nearly 20 years of being workout partners looks like.
The Secret Isn't Motivation. It's Showing Up.
Nikki and Mike understand something everyone on a fitness journey eventually learns:
You're not going to feel motivated every day.
There will be days when you don't want to train.
You show up anyway.
As Nikki puts it:
“There's always gonna be days you don't wanna show up, but you do it anyways.”
Because they know what's waiting on the other side of the workout.
More energy. More confidence. More strength. And the ability to stay active and enjoy everything life has to offer outside the gym.
For Nikki and Mike, consistency itself is an accomplishment.
When you repeatedly do something that makes your life better and makes you feel better, eventually it stops being something you have to do.
It becomes part of who you are.
Stronger in the Gym. Stronger Together.
Fitness hasn't just changed Nikki and Mike physically.
They believe it's strengthened their relationship, too.
Sharing the same mentality toward health has brought them even closer.
Their words say it best:
“We're all in!”
That doesn't mean couples need identical goals, abilities or expectations. In fact, one of the biggest lessons they've learned is understanding that what works for one person may not always work for the other.
You can support each other without having to become each other.
Some days you need your workout partner beside you.
Other days you need to put the headphones on and go to work yourself.
Both are okay.
Why Echelon?
For Nikki and Mike, Echelon isn't simply the place where they work out.
It's the people.
It's the camaraderie.
It's the community.
It's close to home, but more importantly, it feels like home.
Nikki described it perfectly:
“You are our fitness family, our second home. This home is filled with people from all walks of life, from all ages and sizes, to different stages in their fitness journeys. I love seeing so many good humans wanting to make a healthy difference in themselves.”
That's Echelon.
Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different starting points. Different goals.
One fitness community getting stronger together.
Couples Who Work Out Together…
After 31 years together and nearly 20 years training side-by-side, Nikki and Mike make a pretty compelling case for the old saying:
Couples who work out together, stay together. ❤️💪
Their fitness journey has helped them become healthier and stronger while giving them something powerful to share along the way.
Or, as Nikki and Mike put it, working out together has:
“Bonded us and strengthened our relationship…and muscles. 😉”
We couldn't have said it better.
Nikki & Mike's Advice
Their advice for anyone thinking about starting a fitness journey with a spouse, friend or workout partner is simple:
Find someone who holds you accountable and pulls you outside your comfort zone.
Lean into the people who support your goals.
Understand that sometimes you'll want to train alone—and sometimes you'll need someone standing beside you saying:
“Come on. We're going.”
Because motivation comes and goes.
Accountability keeps showing up.
Nikki and Mike, thank you for allowing Echelon Health & Fitness to be part of your story.
After 31 years together and nearly 20 years of training side-by-side, you're a great reminder of what this fitness journey is really about:
Getting stronger. Staying healthy. Supporting each other. Enjoying life. And continuing to show up—together.
