A Journey of Resilience, Reinvention, and Purpose
At Echelon Health & Fitness, we are fortunate to be surrounded by incredible people. Every member who walks through our doors has a story, and some stories remind us just how unpredictable—and rewarding—the journey of life can be.
One of those stories belongs to longtime member Scott Middleman.

Born and raised in England, Scott grew up immersed in the world of professional soccer. His father was a professional player and coach, which meant Scott spent much of his childhood around stadiums, locker rooms, and elite athletes. It also meant constant change. His family frequently relocated throughout England as his father's coaching career evolved, forcing Scott to adapt to new schools, new teammates, and new environments.
At just 16 years old, Scott signed his first professional soccer apprenticeship. Like many young athletes chasing a dream, he quickly learned that talent alone wasn't enough. Long days of training were accompanied by responsibilities that taught discipline, humility, and attention to detail. Every day was an opportunity to prove himself.
But the road to professional sports rarely follows a straight path.

After being released by a professional club as a teenager, Scott discovered that an undiagnosed iron deficiency had severely impacted his performance. Once the condition was identified and treated, his fitness and endurance transformed almost overnight. The experience taught him an important lesson that still resonates today:
Sometimes the obstacle isn't a lack of ability—it is simply an unseen challenge waiting to be solved.
That newfound confidence helped propel Scott back into the professional ranks. Yet more adversity awaited. Serious knee injuries, surgeries, coaching changes, and unexpected setbacks repeatedly threatened his career. Time and time again, he faced moments where it would have been easy to quit.
Instead, he continued moving forward.

His journey eventually took him far beyond England. Scott played professionally in China, where he found himself thousands of miles from home, unable to speak the language, living in a hotel, and learning to navigate an entirely new culture on his own. What initially felt overwhelming became one of the most transformative experiences of his life.
The adventure continued through opportunities in Europe and the United States, eventually bringing him to South Jersey in 2001. What was originally intended to be a short stop became a permanent home.
Today, Scott dedicates his life to helping the next generation of athletes. As a mentor and talent development leader, he works with young soccer players from across the country, guiding them through many of the same challenges he once faced himself. He helps athletes pursue opportunities at the collegiate and professional levels while teaching them lessons that extend far beyond the field.
When asked what he learned from all the ups and downs, Scott's answer was simple:
"Life doesn't always take you where you planned to go. Sometimes the setbacks end up leading you exactly where you're supposed to be."
Looking back, the young player who once sat outside a coach's office fearing his dream was over could never have imagined where his journey would ultimately lead—traveling the world, impacting thousands of young athletes, and building a life in America.
Scott's story serves as a powerful reminder that resilience is not about avoiding challenges. It is about continuing to move forward despite them.

We are proud to have Scott as part of the Echelon family and grateful that he shared his remarkable journey with us.
Thank you, Scott, for inspiring all of us to keep moving forward, embrace the unexpected, and never stop pursuing what's possible.
