Owners Spotlight: David and Susie Chung

Updated: Feb 26, 2019

David and Susie Chung are the friendly owners of Echelon Health and Fitness. After purchasing the Voorhees building back when it was operating as Bally's, they decided to transform the space and create this new business in 2016.

Echelon Health & Fitness is now heading into its third year and the couple, with their Managing Partner, Jeff Quinn, are ready to take this business to the next level. Continue reading to learn more about their story.

Tell us a little about yourself?

Dave: My name is David Chung and I am the owner of EHF. I lived in NY for over 35 years and came down to south Jersey about 4 years ago.

Susie: I'm Korean-American. Immigrated from South Korea in 1978. We have 2 kids, twins Daniel and Katherine 22 years old.

What did you do before owning a gym?

Dave: I was in retail business in NY for about 26 years working 12 to 14 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Susie: Before joining EHF, I worked as retail pharmacist.

How has owning a gym changed your life?

Dave: Owning and operating EHF made myself become more health conscious. I learned about importance of exercise and eating habits.

Susie: Being an owner has made me more humble and grateful. Grateful to all of the members, instructors, trainers and co-workers who truly love what they do but most importantly grateful for the blessing that God has allowed us to be one EHF family.

What is your favorite part about Echelon?

Dave: Talking and meeting people from all different backgrounds is my favorite part about coming to the gym. Every day is learning experience for me.

Susie: Soon as I walk in to the gym, you can feel all the positive energy and know that its a place where everyone "knows" and motivates each other with TLC.

What do you like to do when you are not at the gym?

Dave: When I am not at the gym, I am usually somewhere in the ocean fishing. I love to fish and bring home days catch and share with my family and friends.

Susie: Spend time with family and friends. Cooking.

What are your future goals for Echelon?

Dave: I want EHF to continue to be the best gym in south Jersey providing all fitness needs for south jersey residents. I want all south jersey residents to try EHF.

Susie: To open 2 more gyms in the South Jersey area in next 5 years. God willing.

How do you define success?

Dave: Success is earned by hard work and recognized by others. Success is achieved when all members are satisfied and happy with EHF. It's not a success if one member is not happy.

Susie: Success is accomplishing your goals while being humble.

Do you have a favorite quote?

Dave: My favorite quote is from the bible: Psalm Chapter 1 A song of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He causes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Susie: "Do to others what you would have them do to you"

Anything else you would like to include?

Dave: God has my back and I am not worried.
